SIGNIS, the World Catholic Association for Communication, launched the #MediaforPeace campaign (media for peace) on March 24.

March 24 is the feast of San Óscar Romero , patron saint of SIGNIS, who was martyred in 1980 for his work to promote peace through the media, in El Salvador.

SIGNIS is a non-governmental organization made up of Catholic media professionals from around the world, whose purpose is to promote inspiration, knowledge and the necessary support so that communicators can tell the stories of their communities to audiences near and far.

The #MediaForPeace engagement campaign is part of SIGNIS 'work to build a culture of peace through the media. The initiative aims to promote media literacy, so that individuals and organizations can harness the power of the media to build peace.

To raise funds in support of this effort, organizations, communities, families, and individuals are invited to send in their donations .

"The media is a powerful tool that can be used to build and strengthen the common good," explained SIGNIS President Helen Osman . "We have the ability to stop the lies and misinformation that tear our communities apart. Like San Óscar Romero, we can amplify the voices of those who have been repressed. 'Peace is dynamism. Peace is generosity. It is a right and it is a duty, "said San Romero. With our generosity, we can make peace a right and a duty for all."

Schools, parishes, organizations, community leaders, public figures, philanthropists, artists, and citizens from around the world are invited to spread the word about this global commitment effort and contribute with donations. The funds collected will be channeled into three aspects: access to the media; media literacy and education; and training.

Each donor will be invited to vote for an organization located in the United States that uses the media to promote peace. The winners will receive a prize. SIGNIS will award three (3) prizes during the virtual event "Media for Peace: Celebration of Voices", which will take place on May 8, 2021:

  1. The organization with the most votes from donors will receive 10% of the funds raised.
  2. The organization with the second highest number of votes will receive 5% of the funds raised.
  3. The organization with the third most votes from donors will receive 1% of the funds raised.
