The life of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, a French priest, paleontologist, and visionary, repressed by his Jesuit order for defending evolution, is revealed in a drama of personal awakening, a search for meaning, scientific adventure, unresolved conflict with authority, and human love.
The film is an audiovisual biography of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, a Jesuit priest, paleontologist, and 20th-century thinker.
Explore his attempt to integrate science (evolution) and Christian faith , one of the most conflicting axes of his intellectual life.
It is neither an academic nor strictly doctrinal work. According to Frost himself: It focuses on the human and dramatic story of the character; it presents his conflicts with the Church , which censored and marginalized him during his lifetime; and it shows his status as a “visionary” who anticipates current debates.
The documentary explores: His scientific work in paleontology (including the context of evolutionism). His theological thought (cosmic Christ, spiritual evolution). The conflict between institution and intellectual innovation . His exile, censorship, and subsequent reappraisal. It also argues that his ideas are relevant to:
the ecological crisis
the relationship between science, technology, and spirituality
the future of humanity
The director himself states that: it is not aimed solely at Catholics, it seeks to engage the general public, it attempts to reclaim Teilhard as a relevant figure for the present, not as a historical relic
The film presents Teilhard as: a thinker in tension, a precursor (almost “prophetic”), someone who pays the price for thinking beyond the institutional framework
He does not idealize him: he shows him as a complex figure, with internal and external conflicts.
